What Is a VPN and Why Do You Need One?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a technology that creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote server. All your internet traffic passes through this tunnel, hiding your real IP address and protecting your data from prying eyes.

How Does It Work?

When you connect to a VPN, your traffic is encrypted on your device and sent to the VPN server, which then forwards it to the final destination. For the website you visit, the apparent IP is the VPN server's — not yours. For your internet provider (ISP), it sees only encrypted traffic going to the VPN server, unable to see what you're doing.

What Is a VPN Used For?

⚠️ Important: A VPN protects your privacy, but it's not total invisibility. For maximum security, combine the VPN with good digital habits — strong passwords, 2FA, and tools like CyberScan.pt to monitor your online exposure.

What to look for in a VPN

No-Logs Policy

The VPN must not store records of your activity. Prefer providers with independent audits proving the policy.

WireGuard Protocol

Modern protocol offering superior speeds to OpenVPN while maintaining robust security. The gold standard in 2025.

Kill Switch

Automatically disconnects your internet if the VPN drops, preventing your real IP from being accidentally exposed.

Jurisdiction

Providers based in countries without data retention obligations (Switzerland, Panama, British Virgin Islands) are preferable.
